Horse Treats

Horse Treats You Should Know

Horse Treats

Horse treats are something I witness either being given or asked about almost every day at my horse farm.

When they are new customers or arrivals at my farm I will let them know they should not feed their fingers to the horses ( l know I think I’m funny).

Make sure that you ask before you start giving horse treats to horses that you are unfamiliar with.

Don’t Run Out of Horse Treats

The horses at my farm are very familiar with getting treats. We make sure they are all very spoiled.

When people ask me what they like the best I tell them they should bring bags of baby carrots.Horse Treats

The reason is that once you start giving treats all of the horses will stick there head out and expect to receive some of what ever you have.

Therefore you do not want to run out.

Best Horse Treats for Help with Feeding Supplements

Getting horses to eat can sometimes be more complicated than it needs to be.

Actually they’re pretty happy with their grain and will generally gobble that up.

It’s when you start adding medicine or supplements that it can be a challenge to getHorse Treats them to eat.

I enjoy watching Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins sing “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down”

That treat always worked for me, as well as most humans, but when it comes to horses why not try fenugreek?

Fenugreek May Be the Key to Feeding Finicky Horses

Horse Treats While surfing the web looking for new information that I can share with you I came across two studies that I found very eye opening.

One test was in 2008 and the other was in 2017. Although the tests probably wouldn’t be FDA approved they found that horses preferred fenugreek.

A simple spice that you can obtain at any supermarket.

I Tried But My Horse Doesn’t Want Fenugreek as Part of Their Horse Treats

That’s okay.  As I have said they didn’t use more than 15 horses In either study. Your horse could definitely be one that prefers a different taste or none at all.

The one study found that of the 15 flavors tested 12 flavors were universally accepted: apple, banana, carrot, cherry, cumin, fenugreek, garlic, ginger, oregano, peppermint, and rosemary turmeric.

Then they tested To see which of 12 flavors they would eat up the fastest.

The horses’ top-ranked flavors were:

  1. Fenugreek
  2. Banana
  3. Cherry
  4. Rosemary
  5. Cumin
  6. Carrot
  7. Peppermint
  8. Oregano

Farms Always Need Help Brushing Horses

One thing that you will soon notice, at whatever barn you are in, is that people seem to be working all the time.

In over 25 years I have rarely spent time outside when I haven’t asked someone to pick something up or help out in some way.

How do I Ask?

I’ve had many people ask me about working off their fees. One thing I let them know right up front is that we make a living on charging for lessons.

That being said generally people who ask will be put on a list. Not much at a horse farm is a sit down job, and generally we are looking for self starters.

Our opinion has always been that if we need to watch you do your job we can do it ourselves.

We don’t mind -explaining or having you follow along so you can see what the job entails.

Don’t expect to be constantly reminded.

The three most important rules that you have to remember are communicate, communicate, communicate.

Be Clear

If you need a day off or you don’t feel well let the barn owner know. Make sure your duties are clear.

Straighten out the compensation immediately. It’s important that everything is spelled out.  Over the years I’ve witnessed this activity turn quickly into a mess.

Purchase a Few Brushes To Get Started

Please don’t expect us to be babysitters.

We love having little ones around.

If they are under 10 years old supervision is required and needs to be paid for.

If you are serious, and are able contribute, you should have little trouble getting work to help you afford horseback riding lessons.

My cousin Tilly and I would play for hours in the back yard.

I was the youngest of six, properly spoiled and pretty much always got what I wanted.

Of course that was back in 1965 and things have changed a little bit since then.

Now the action figures you will find include Breyer Classics Chelsea Show Jumper and Breyer Let’s Go Riding Western, among others.

If board games are what you were looking for, then please check out  Fantasy Stables: Regular Edition Board Game

I enjoyed the fact that they had a lot of customer reviews. After reading them I noticed that bad reviews were quickly responded to by the manufacturer’s representative.

Fantasy Horse Stables

We usually recommend the game for ages 13+. We’ve definitely sold the game to younger kids on occasion (and heard later that they absolutely love it) but it’s usually a super horsey kid that rides/shows or plays a lot of other adult board games. We have a Junior Edition of the game that’s perfect for younger kids and pre-teens and is also fun for parents/older siblings to play with them as well. Usually if people are on the fence about which version is the right choice (Junior vs Regular) we always recommend the Junior.

I hope that I have helped you along your way. Remember that electronic and board games are usually played indoors. These are often great horse games for families.

They also make a good rainy day or night time endeavor, alone or with friends. They never seem to tire of horse games for girls.
